The Stone Dairy at Sully Plantation
About Sully Plantation
Sully
Plantation, a two and a half-story farmhouse, was built in 1794 by
Richard Bland Lee, northern Virginia's first congressman and uncle
of Robert E. Lee, who lived here with his wife, Elizabeth Collins
Lee, until 1811 (they are buried here). Owned and operated by the
Fairfax County Park Authority, the house is furnished with Federal
period antiques and looks much as it would have when the Lees lived
here.
The original plantation had more than 3,000 acres. Washington Dulles
International Airport now occupies most of the land, leaving the
main house and original stone dairy, smokehouse and kitchen
building. A highlight of the site are the representative slave
quarters, which demonstrate the harshness of everyday life for the
plantation's African-American workers.
