Great Falls is a cascading waterfall dropping 80 feet at the head of the Potomac River fall line about 15 miles upriver from Washington DC. The National Park Service manages Great Falls Park which is known for both its scenic beauty and the often roaring and violent falls. Remnants of the 220 year old Patowmack Canal remain on the Virginia side.
The park offers scenic overlooks, foot paths, rock climbing, fishing
and picnicking.
Great Falls is among the nation's richest zip code areas and a real
estate mixture of upscale neighborhoods, executive estates and small
horse farms. It is home to much of the most valuable residential real
estate in Fairfax County. The community is served by a small
commercial zone at Georgetown Pike and Springvale Road with it's
trendy shops, service merchants and fine restaurants.
Bordered by the Potomac River to the north, the area is densely treed
and rolling. Numerous parks and recreation opportunities are
available. Great Falls Elementary School and a Public Library are
adjacent to the commercial downtown.
