About Lake Anne Village & Plaza Lake Anne is the showcase of the first “new town” developed in the United States
post World War II. Built in the 1960’s, the Village and Plaza are now
approaching 40 years old. Although, it was built as the model for a new way to live and work; time,
age, deterioration and maybe more so lack of promotion has affected its economic viability.
Robert E. Simon was clearly the visionary who brought together the
revolutionary design for Reston and sold the concept to local
government. His vision of Reston has been borrowed from and copied ever since, across the region, country and world. In my opinion, Lake
Anne Village was Mr. Simon's masterpiece ... a wonderful concept and
design in the 1960's and certainly those concepts and that design
have withstood the test of time and Lake Anne remains a wonderful
place to live, shop and work.
The Village is now the subject of a revitalization effort and
hopefully it will result in a profitable commercial core for the
future. The commercial base needs to be tailored to what the
adjoining communities can financially support while attracting the
necessary drive-in traffic to make the small businesses, shops and
restaurants economically viable. The Plaza suffers from poor to nonexistent
public relations and poorly mixed shops with unnecessary
duplication. The merchants need to be flexible to offer varied
products and services and to have those markets change and vary with
the seasons.
Lake Anne, the Village and the Plaza remain one of the most truly beautiful places in all of Northern Virginia ... the real problem is
that all the natural and architectural beauty ... remains largely a
well-kept secret. I think we will see good things from the Village
in the future and hopefully revitalization will make it sustainable.
